Schalk van der Merwe, has, for 20 years, been managing the Oude Rust Oord (previously J.T.Potgieter Tuiste vir Bejaardes) in Windhoek West very efficiently, with institutions like the Schanzen Oord having gradually been added to his portfolio.

Since 1992 the Alte Feste Lions have been supporting Oude Rust Oord occasionally in money or in kind and were thus able to monitor the exceptional social activities of Mr van der Merwe. This convinced the Lions, that he would be a worthy recipient of their highest award, The Melvin Jones Fellowship.
